Ketamine Treatment for Treatment-Resistant Depression
What is ketemaine?
Ketamine is a medication that has been used since the 1950s as an anesthetic. More recently, it has been shown to be a rapid and effective treatment for certain types of depression—especially when two or more antidepressants have not helped.
How Does Ketamine Work?
Ketamine works on the glutamate system in the brain, which plays a key role in brain growth and communication. This stimulation promotes rapid brain development, which may underlie its antidepressant effects.
How Quickly Does Ketamine Work?
Some people notice improvement within minutes to hours, but most begin to feel better within 1–3 days. The antidepressant effect may last for several days, so repeated doses are often needed.
How is Ketamine Given?
Ketamine is given as an intravenous infusion (a drip). The infusion usually lasts about 40 minutes. Afterward, you may feel a bit unsteady or drowsy. Most people are ready to go home after about 75 minutes total. You will be monitored by a doctor and a nurse during your treatment.
What Might You Feel During Treatment?
You may feel lightheaded, woozy, or drowsy. Some people experience a dissociative state (feeling detached from your body) or psychedelic-like experiences. These are usually mild and temporary. If you feel anxious, your doctor can give you medication to help.
Who Can Prescribe and Administer Ketamine?
Only your psychiatrist can prescribe ketamine. It must be administered by a trained professional, typically someone with anesthetic training. Always use clinics recommended by your psychiatrist.
Side Effects and Safety Notes
Common side effects include drowsiness, nausea, and dissociation. Although ketamine can be addictive if misused, it is safe when used appropriately under medical supervision.
Is Ketamine Right for You?
Ketamine may be especially helpful for people with treatmentresistant depression or severe suicidal thoughts. However, it is not suitable for everyone. Talk to your psychiatrist to determine if ketamine is appropriate for your situation.
